Ebb and Flow
A biannual periodical that focuses on the acts of restoration and renewal.
TASK
To explore and imagine new ways to shape a reading experience, using content, typography, layout, and physical form to develop and execute a visual system that functions successfully across multiple issues of a new periodical of choice.
ABOUT
Ebb and Flow is a wellness magazine that uses the rhythms of nature as a guide for pacing ourselves. Born from a desire to take a step back from the virtual world, this publication takes cues from the natural environment, encouraging readers to slow down or move with intention when needed. Centered around the theme of the tide ebbing and flowing, each edition provides a variety of tools, mindfulness practices, interviews, and even an herb guidance in order to promote daily grounding techniques.
DELIVERABLES
Two perfect bound editions of a periodical, each with over 70 pages.

Introduction
Ebb and Flow is released biannually, with each edition anchored to one of the two pivotal moments in the natural calendar.
RESTORATION | EDITION 1, WINTER 2025
Winter releases emphasize the process of "Ebb," which by definition is the outward, receding movement of the tide. Taking cues from the Winter Solstice, this edition encourages the reader to discover the value in the act of decompression. As the natural world slows down in winter, the Restoration edition, the magazine's first release, creates the space for the reader to do the same.
RENEWAL | EDITION 2, SUMMER 2025
Summer releases emphasize the process of “Flow,” which by definition is the rising phase when ocean water moves toward the shore. Inspired by the longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice, this edition is marked by an abundance of energy and a celebration of the earth at its most expressive. The magazine's second release, “Renewal,” is meant to harness that feeling, offering content that encourages the reader to channel momentum toward a sense of personal vitality.

GUIDING QUESTIONS
As the conceptualization for this project began, these key questions were created to guide the research and design process:
1
How can I have my readers feel more immersed within their physical surroundings?
2
How can I mediate the readers energy levels in a way that isn't overstepping or controlling?

MOODBOARD/INITIAL CONTENT
I set out to cultivate an organic tactile tone for this periodical through playful typography and curated photography. I sought out natural imagery, Light and Space installations, and environmental art to complement written content.

RESTRAINT
I explored how white space and editorial restraint could allow the content and imagery to speak for themselves and the pages to breathe. While "Restoration" and "Renewal" were initially designed with distinct visual languages to reflect their unique holistic approaches to wellbeing, I ultimately unified the layouts with a similar style guide and content structure for the purpose of showing how the two themes naturally intertwine.

PACE
PACE
The pace at which a reader moved through my publication was an important consideration. I experimented with how paper weight and format could shape the experience and tempo at which my reader moved through the publication.
