Flux
A curly hair leave-in conditioner brand based on the frequent state of change.
TASK
Using research and critical thinking, create a new project that synthesizes the skills learned throughout my design courses.
ABOUT
Flux is a curl-specific leave-in conditioner brand that was born from personal frustrations on having no clear education on how to properly care for curly hair. While most products are sold by curl shape and size, Flux is centered around the two factors that actually determine what your hair needs, that being porosity, which is how well hair absorbs and retains moisture, and the climate you're located in. The goal was to build a brand rooted in transparency, making hair science accessible without being overwhelming.
DELIVERABLES
Label design, campaign poster series.

Problem
In the U.S, 1 in 2 Gen Z consumers report having naturally textured hair, yet many still lack the education and encouragement to embrace their natural hair.
BUILT ON APPEARANCE RATHER THAN BEHAVIOR
Many curly hair products are categorized based off of the Andre Walker Hair Typing system, which is determined by the shape and size of your curl. In reality, product selection should be based on porosity, which is how well hair retains and absorbs moisture. This can fluctuate based on heat damage, stress, and hormones.
LACK OF ACCESSIBILITY
Hair knowledge is often learned through expensive salon settings, thus making product and hair care knowledge inaccessible.
LOCATION AND SEASONAL CHANGES
Air humidity greatly affects how hair behaves, making hair care while traveling or adjusting to seasonal changes feel overwhelming. When familiar products and curated routines stop working, it can leave people feeling frustrated and unsure of how to care for their hair.
Problem
Ebb and Flow is released biannually, with each edition anchored to one of the two pivotal moments in the natural calendar.

LACK OF ACCESSIBILITY
Summer releases emphasize the process of “Flow,” which by definition is the rising phase when ocean water moves toward the shore. Inspired by the longest day of the year, the Summer Solstice, this edition is marked by an abundance of energy and a celebration of the earth at its most expressive. The magazine's second release, “Renewal,” is meant to harness that feeling, offering content that encourages the reader to channel momentum toward a sense of personal vitality.

Design Objectives
Design Objectives
1
Create transparency through packaging design to help consumers understand which product would satisfy their needs.
2
Design a compact product system that encourages consumers to take their hair care routine on the go.
3
Establish a color system that organizes product differentiation clearly while maintaining visual cohesion.
4
Challenge conventional hair care branding by embracing natural texture changes rather than something to be maintained.

FLUX FIELD KIT
The Flux Field Kit was created to help people find what type of product works for them, eliminating the need to buy an excessive amount of product or getting lost in hours of hair research. The kit consists of only three different types of leave-in conditioners, a Light Mist, a Soft Milk, and a Rich Butter. Most people will gravitate toward one product as their primary, based on their hair's natural moisture absorption behavior. However, as climate and environmental conditions change, the other products become relevant.

CAMPAIGN
To complement Flux’s Field Kit, the campaign explores the idea that hair never looks the same twice, responding to changing environments and hormonal shifts. With a product designed to not live on a bathroom shelf, I deliberately shot in an open air environment, showing the progression of being outside in a natural landscape that is meant to be deliberately unspecific, to showing the progression of transitioning to a new place.
